JALA NETI

JALA NETI

(Nasal cleansing with water)

Jala neti is a technique of cleansing the nasal passages.  Using warm salt water and a special neti pot.  The salt needs to be in the correct proportions – if there is too much salt or not enough there will be a burning sensation in the nostrils.

The benefits of doing jala neti is it removes mucus and pollution from the sinuses and nasal passageways.  It supports the prevention and management of respiratory diseases and helps to maintain the health of ears, eyes and throat. It relieves muscle tension in the face and gives a fresh youthful appearance, removes drowsiness and brings a feeling of freshness/lightness  to the head. It soothes and calms the brain and alleviates anger, depression and anxiety.

There is a whole process to this practise and it is best to be taught by a qualified yoga teacher proficient in this shatkarma. (shat – six, karma – action are the six purification techniques) Neti is one of the six purifications techniques that balance vata, pitta and kapha doshas in yoga.
